“How on earth could
that matter at all?” I asked, as the constant rumble below us
reached its steady peak.
“Because the chest
freezer might remember as well.” came the reply. “Did it always
make this noise?”
“Don't be
ridiculous,” I exclaimed, exasperated. “The freezer doesn't have
a memory.”
“You've forgotten
what has happened in your house these last few hours?” Oak accused
me.
“No,” I replied,
“But that doesn't mean...”
“This place is now a
bridge between The Warp and The Weave,” he interrupted. “Here,
objects can have memories, as do places. It's perfectly possible for
your freezer to have a memory, or for that matter, contain a frozen
vampire.” He frowned for a moment, caught in a passing thought.
“Did it always make this noise?”
“No,” Mary told him. “Only for the last year we had it. It
was when it got like this that we got a new one.”
