Sixth Interlude - Part Four

The Captain and his crew stand silently on the deck of their ship, watching the water for any sign of Gotlieb's return.

Briggs quickly grows bored with it. “Can anyone tell me what the hell just happened?” he demands.

They shrug collectively. “Dunno Cap'n,” says Albert, the first mate. “He just started blithering about her wanting him then came out here 'n' jumped.”

“Was he at the grog?”

“No Cap'n” the mate replies, “As per your instructions, the grog is locked away while we're becalmed.”

“See that it is,” Briggs commands. “Post a guard for the night. If the lad returns, throw him in the brig. The rest of you, back to your rest. I want every man alert and able when that wind comes.”
