The effect is instant. Strauss' finger has barely released the
button when a roar begins to build at the rear of the car. Robert,
looking through the rear window at the rapidly gaining pen, sees the
edge of a glow appear at the back of the vehicle. Then it happens.
Without warning all three passengers are pushed deep into their seats
as the car begins to accelerate. Their skins are drawn tight across
their faces as the pressure builds and, to Robert's relief, they
start to increase their lead on the pen. In the front, Strauss holds
the wheel tightly, struggling to keep them on course.
“Up ahead,” Raven shouts above the noise, “Is that a tunnel?”
