It came out of nowhere, literally. I'd had a little look out of the
window a few moments earlier, while I was waiting for the kettle to
boil, and I'd seen the sky was cloudless. The stars were twinkling
away like they always did, which had added to my favourable mood.
Then it was as if it was all around us, a huge roll of thunder,
monstrous and vibrating. It gave me such a shock I almost jumped out
of my skin. I didn't, obviously, but I did drop a mug and knocked
over the jar of coffee, spilling it everywhere. That's when I swore
to myself, louder than I intended, because Mary shouted my name in
shock.
