“What kind of
contradictions?” I asked.
“The Forest pays
attention when there is an imbalance,” Oak replied. “An
infestation or a psychosis or, well, whatever. An agent comes,
assesses, and acts. One of those actions might be to call for
assistance. Eventually, one way or another, balance is restored,
everything back to normal.”
He began to pace again,
to Mary's obvious tutted annoyance.
“If Raven resolved
the imbalance,” Oak continued, “Why are unusual things still
happening? And if there is still an imbalance, why are they not
happening constantly. What's happening here seems tidal, the water
of the Weave ebbing and flowing around your house.”
“That's unusual, is
it?” Mary asked.
“Not unusual,” Oak
replied, “Unique.”
That's when we heard the knock at the front door.
