He leads her to the bottom of the stairs.
“We can't go up there,” she says, “We'll be trapped.”
“One,” Raven replies, “A staircase is easier to defend. And
two, we wont be staying!”
He takes her upstairs, into the first room he sees, closing the door
behind him.
“When I open this door,” he tells her, “I want you to think
about a market. With stalls, and food and whatnot. Can you do that?”
She looks a little bemused but nods.
Raven grips the handle door. “On three,” he says. “One…
two... three!”
He opens and steps through the door, into a market. It occurs to him
almost immediately that two things are awry. The girl is no longer
with him, and everybody at that market is staring at him. Many of
them are armed.
“This is bold, Corvus,” says the voice of the Author, “Even for
you”.
